For the first time, colour authority Pantone announced two colours at once as their Pantone Colour of the year in 2016, “Rose Quartz” and “Serenity”. The two shades were blended together as ‘Colour of the year’ as a symbolic gesture of the balance between a warmer embracing rose tone and the cooler tranquil blue, reflecting connection and wellness as well as a soothing sense of order and peace. Perhaps the perfect metaphor for our busy, modern-day lives and the serenity that we constantly seek as an antidote.

Rose Quartz is a persuasive yet gentle tone that conveys compassion and a sense of composure. Serenity is weightless and airy, like the expanse of the blue sky above us, bringing feelings of respite and relaxation even in turbulent times.

Big brands have taken note

One of these colours has taken centrestage more boldly than the other, peaking currently as the world’s favourite for the moment.Rose Quartz, Millennial Pink, Scandi Pink, Tumblr Pink, and Pantone 13-1520, all refer to the same hue that is colouring some of the biggest brands out there at the moment. Well, it’s not just one color on the wheel. It embraces a range of shades in Pantone terms, from Rose Quartz and Pale Dogwood to Candy Pink. Millennial Pink is not always pink. Sometimes it falls on a spectrum between beige and peach.

Perhaps the time most people starting paying attention to it's mass market appeal was when huge brands took notice. Remember the hype and ensuing scramble as millions pre-ordered the new Rose Gold iPhone? Samsung, one of Apple’s biggest competitors, have similarly released their own versions in the popular colour, most notably their smart watch (Gear S2).

It’s not just technology brands that have embraced Rose Quartz, you will notice it everywhere, including in home decor as statement pieces and bold walls, in fashion as a gender neutral palette, funky hair colouring, makeup palettes, on food, as a base theme for brands in logos, print ads, and so much more. Once you start noticing it, you will start to see it everywhere.

For many brands, the idea of “luxury packaging” immediately brings to mind high costs, complex production and large minimum orders. In reality, premium packaging is rarely about how much you spend. It is about how intentional the experience feels. Customers notice the weight of the box, the precision of the fit, the quality of materials and the consistency of colour and detail. When these elements are handled well, packaging can feel luxurious without requiring a fully bespoke solution.

Most subscription boxes don’t fail because of the product—they fail because the experience becomes forgettable. The subscription box market continues to grow, but so do customer expectations. Today, subscribers are not simply paying for products; they are investing in an experience that arrives at their door every month. That experience begins the moment the box is delivered and continues through the unboxing process, making packaging one of the most important elements of any subscription offering.
