How does it work?

Step 1: Design Die Engraved

Your logo or design is engraved into a metal die - also known as a block, plate or stamp - using the same precision process used for foil blocking, but without the addition of colour.

Step 2: Job Set-up

The metal die is mounted onto the blocking machine and carefully aligned with the exact position required on the gift box. Several test impressions are made to refine the pressure settings and ensure a clean, even and well-defined deboss. This takes around 45 minutes.

Step 3: Heat & Press

Once testing is complete, production begins. Each box is debossed individually, using controlled pressure to create a crisp, recessed impression.

Step 4: Finished Result

Your boxes are complete, featuring your logo or design pressed directly into the gift box surface for a beautifully subtle, tactile debossed finish. This technique debosses the design deeper into the surface than when using coloured foil.

Can add foil colour to the design?

Yes, please select 1 colour foil or tone-on-tone foil for a single coloured foil technique. These methods do still include a slightly debossed finish, but it is very slight in comparison to no-colour debossing where it has a deeper impression in the box surface.

I want debossing, but with a gloss finish - is this possible?

Yes, you can achieve the no-colour debossing look but with a glossy finish by adding in a clear foil. Please request this when submitting your quote to progress an order.

My design is very detailed, will this work for no-colour debossing?

Because debossing doesn’t include a colour, it is just the impression of the logo, it may lose visual definition and is not be the best option for very tiny details or intricate designs. We can help review your design to see if it will work with a debossing technique when you submit your order request. Serif fonts and small ® can be difficult to produce. Consider thickening your artwork design and removing ®. This technique works best with thinker text and lines.

My design is very large, will this work?

We have extremely skilled debossing technicians who can work with most designs, however, it can sometimes present challenges with designs over 22cm in size, so it’s best to stick to sizes under this dimension.

Can I get a printed sample box?

Yes, we can produce a physical printed sample, but please note that it can be costly due to the set-up involved. To keep things efficient, we provide a free digital proof of your logo on your chosen gift box style. This is supplied for your approval before we proceed with your bulk order, and most customers find it gives a good visual representation of the final printed result.

Can I print a logo with gradients or shading?

Debossing is a solid branding technique, it is not possible to include gradients or shading, but we can produce a design like this using Digital Print.

Is Debossing and Embossing The Same Thing?

No, they are actually opposites, although the terms are often confused or used interchangeably. Debossing presses your design down into the surface of the gift box, while embossing raises the design up from the surface. A helpful way to remember is: Debossing = D for Down.

We can only produce a debossed finish on our stock gift boxes. Embossing must be carried out during manufacturing, before the board sections are wrapped in paper. Is no colour debossing the same as blind debossing?

Yes they are descriptions for the same process. A debossed effect using no colour.
